A growing number of avid gamers are showcasing their creativity by making fan art and fanfiction to support their favorite game franchises and characters.

Have a scroll through Twitter and Instagram, and you’ll see hundreds of drawings and comic strips from the Among Us community, while fanfic platforms are filled with lots of Kingdom Hearts and Pokemon-inspired novels and short stories.

But while some of the best fanfic authors and fan artists get a lot of love and support from their peers online, they often don’t get the commercial recognition they deserve. Can you really turn fan art or fanfic into a career?

Nicole Tanner has spent over 15 years writing, editing and podcasting for video games and video game publications. She graduated in 1999 with a degree in Journalism, and has since worked at top game-industry and game-review publications such as IGN, The Sims Official Magazine, GameNow, MacLife, and Pixelkin.

In addition to writing and editing articles about games, Nicole has also contributed directly at video game studios. She has been the Director of PR & Marketing for Foundation 9 Entertainment – a company that ran several game studios around the world – and was a Game Writer in charge of story development for all of the games at KIXEYE.

Meet Darby McDevitt, Video Game Writer

Darby McDevitt, Video Game Scriptwriter
Darby makes his own luck by working hard and saying “yes” at every opportunity.

Darby McDevitt is a scriptwriter for the hugely successful Assassin’s Creed series of games. But he doesn’t only write for games. He’s also released several prose fiction works, has been published in national literary journals and anthologies, and has released several music albums. He’s also written, produced, directed, or designed the audio for a number of successful films.

That should give you a hint about how Darby approaches his career: passionately. The best way to get good at something like writing for video games is to do it, and do it a lot.
